Charles Henry Newman papers, 1866-1966.

Personal and professional papers of Newman, including correspondence with his parents, Henry J. And Harriet Newman, school papers, professional papers relating to the development of his business as a photographer and printer's representative, memos and expense accounts, photography notes, and sketchbook of landscape scenes. Also includes papers of other family members, including a small amount of correspondence and personal papers of or relating to Charles's parents, the the papers of his son, Winthrop Randall Newman (d. 1987), an amateur inventor, local historian, and genealogist. Winthrop's papers include correspondence, local history notes, and article drafts, genealogical research, and various newspaper clippings. The collection also contains a large amount of printed material, including painting and photography advertisements and circulars amassed by Charles Newman during his professional career, and many programs, bulletins, and publications related to Andover and Phillips Academy, the bulk presumably collected by Winthrop Newman. The bulk of correspondence between Charles Newman and his parents is his letters to his mother (1895-1896) written by Charles in McIndoe Falls, Vt., and later letters from Harriet S. Newman to Charles and Maude, written from Barrett, Vt. Also includes papers relating to the activities of the alumni of Phillips Andover class of 1892; Charles Newman's sample book, illustrating by oil and water color, birds-eye views of manufacturing properties and their various uses, geared to selling his services to factories and manufacturers; photography book containing Newman's notations of photography subjects; sketchbook of landscape scenes; correspondence between Winthrop Newman and the American Woolen Company relating to improving the productivity of their Lawrence mills with his inventions; Andover related materials including the biographical catalogue of Phillips Academy, materials of South Church and other churches, various celebrations and festivals, and programs of several local theater companies and other events; and non-Andover related materials such as programs from the Methuen Memorial Music Hall.
